Four Essentials for your family when visiting the Fort in St. Augustine, Castillo de San Marcos.

When planning a trip to St. Augustine, most would say that visiting the fort, Castillo de San Marcos is a “must do.” Maintained by the National Park Service, the fort dates back to over 300 years ago and stands as the oldest and largest masonry fortress within the United States.

Wether it be a trip downtown or a jaunt to the beach, being prepared for a family outing can often be the key to your success, which is why we’ve prepared our top four essentials when visiting Castillo de San Marcos.

  1. Expect to spend anywhere from 1hr - 2hrs, depending on your family’s interest level. With various rooms located throughout the fort, there is plenty to see and learn about. This includes a mock-up of where soldiers would sleep and stay while on watch to where artillery was stored.

On Weekends, Historic Weapons demonstrations occur at 10:30, 11:30, 1:30, 2:30 & 3:30 and typically last about 10 minutes. We recommend planning accordingly by letting your family know in advance that it may get crowded and loud for a brief period of time. This is a wonderful demonstration if the timing works for your visit!

  2. Avoid a stroller if you can and opt for a carrier if possible. If your young family is visiting downtown St. Augustine, you will probably have a stroller with you in order to cover more ground, however, it can be a bit limiting when visiting Castillo de San Marcos. Although strollers are permitted and can be maneuvered in the lower part of the fort, the terrain inside the rooms may be difficult to navigate and you are unable to get a stroller to the top of the fort. Those who wish to see the top of the fort (and an amazing view) must be able to climb a large set of coquina stairs and doing this with a stroller is simply not doable. As a mother of young children, I have been in this position before and what I have done is bring a carrier with me in the stroller and simply leave the stroller and the bottom of the stairs away from foot traffic.

  3. Become a Junior Ranger. The Junior Ranger program encourages children of all ages to participate in their visit to the historic monument. You can ask for an activity booklet which will guide you and your child around the fort to read exhibit information, watch videos and ask questions. Once the book is completed, return to the gift shop and receive a Junior Ranger Badge from Castillo de San Marcos.

  4. Stay at St. Augustine Beach Villas! After a day of walking around downtown enjoying the history of the oldest city, relax by the beach, enjoy a cold beverage in your private patio, or dine at one of the local restaurants all within walking distance of the Villas.
